The College of Communication’s undergraduate Twitter handle @comugrad won the award for “Social Media’s Best Barnes & Noble College” in the sixth annual Shorty Awards. This category honors universities across the country that use social media to drive campus engagement with students and faculty. Through @comugrad, the College of Communication keeps students up to date with important information and events and actively engages with the community. The account has also led various Twitter campaigns like #COMinaday and the PR News’ Social Media Icon award nominated #myCOM.

The creator and principle tweeter from @comugrad, Assistant Dean Micha Sabovik said, “It’s such an honor to win this award, because it really highlights the talent and creativity of our amazing content creators. This is a vibrant, engaged college and this award speaks to the high-level involvement of our students, alumni, faculty and staff.”

The team accepted the award from Retta, from NBC’s Parks and Recreation, and took a selfie with the actress after receiving their award.

In their sixth year, the Shorty Awards honor the best of social media, recognizing people and organizations producing short-form content across social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more. This is the second nomination for @comugrad in the Barnes & Noble College category. The award was presented at their annual ceremony in New York City on April 7, 2014. The College of Communication was a finalist alongside other schools University of Houston, Binghamton University, Texas Tech, Illinois State, Rowan University and West Virginia University. WVU won the award last year.
